| What is an iPod and why do I need it? |
|
iPod is another one of those "BUZZ" words we hear mentioned all the time. At this point I think it is safe to say it more than a "BUZZ" word and has moved past pop culture into full mainstream use. An iPod is a digital storage device that is used most commonly to play music and movies. Music is stored digitally in an MP3 format. MP3 is a form of audio compression. Music is sampled and information is removed from the music to make it a smaller file. The music is compressed by software on your computer and how much music information is lost is based on what “bit rate” your “rip” it at. You can "RIP" the music down to 32kbits or up to 320kbits. The lower the number the lower the quality of playback you get but you can put more music in the same digital space. Conversely the higher the bit rate, the higher quality of play back you get as well as less music stored in the same digital space. In most standard audio systems a bit rate of 128kbits will sound passable but flaws or deviations in the music can be picked up. In better audio systems or if you enjoy better, fuller sound you will want to use a higher bit rate. Personally 320kbits is what I recommend. At this high of a bit rate most people would be hard pressed to hear the difference on most audio systems. The program used to “rip” the music will sample the music and take the quieter bits of information that It determine you can not here and removes them. The lower the bit rate is the more aggressively the music information is removed or in other words more music is removed. In many cases the information removed is focused in the higher and lower frequency range thus in many cases you may here a loss of the high frequency that can make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up and the extreme low end bass may also suffer.
